Discussion:
eaglerc.erc where?

I can't find eaglerc.usr for version 5.4. I have read the update notes and
searched the specified registry key - nothing. According to the release
notes, another possible location is whatever is specified in a $HOME
variable. Well, I don't have a $HOME variable specified. Perhaps I would
specify one if I knew how but instruction seems absent.

What I need to do is turn off the context menu that pops up when I want to
move a group.

I have eaglerc.usr that was installed under version 416, and I added the
line "Option.ToggleCtrlForGroupSelectionAndContextMenu = "1"".
Naturally, version 5.4 ignores that, and the offending context menu still
inturrupts me. So, now what? I have lived with this irritation for months
and finally I can't stand it any more.

Maybe I should put this in the suggestions group, but why don't you just put
the eaglerc.usr file in the installation or .bin folder, and be done with
it, instead of hiding it either here or there (or NOWHERE)?

When you feel better Brett, maybe you can try to hold down the Control Key
manually.....I know that it's tough.....

Maybe you have to use a good file manager nothing from Bill. F.i.
TotalCommander.

Look into :

C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\Application data\CadSoft\EAGLE\

or similar (This is from XP).

And don't panic use good tols instead :-D !

Thank you Grzegorz Zalot. It took me a little bit of hunting before I found
the "correct" identity.
That is a hidden folder, why it would not get found doing a "Search". Looks
like I am in business!!!

I will repeat my plea from the original post:
"why don't you just put the eaglerc.usr file in the installation or .bin
folder, and be done with
it, instead of hiding it..."

eaglerc.usr WAS hidden.
Now, I can edit the file to eliminate the annoying, useless context menu.
Thanks again.

Thanks to all who helped me on this. Eaglerc.usr is installed in a hidden
folder under one of the several identities on my PC. I have made a shortcut
to the file in a more accessable location.

To eliminate the popup menu I thought I could add the following line to
eaglerc.usr.
"SET Option.ToggleCtrlForGroupSelectionAndContextMenu = "1""

So, after spending a few hours trying to undo a so-called improvement in
Eagle5, well, the context menu changes is still there. The fix did not work.

I cannot appreciate that after grouping and right clicking the move button,
I must then choose between a list of options, some of which don't work
anyway. It's STUPID, but that is only my opinion.

But, what about this: How am I going to mitre a group? How will I name a
group? Split, or optimize a group?? The list goes on and on. Move is near
the bottom of the list. GIVE ME A BREAK.

Why is it even called a context menu? Most options are out of context with
my previous mouse-clicks.

(Where's that Xanax?)
from "history.beta.txt" file:

"- Since the context menu function on the right mouse button interferes
with the selection of groups, a group is now selected with Ctrl plus
right mouse button. If you want to have the old method of selecting
groups
back, you can can add the line

Option.ToggleCtrlForGroupSelectionAndContextMenu = "1"

to the eaglerc.usr file. This will allow
selecting groups with the right mouse button only and require Ctrl plus
right mouse button for context menus."

I've been using "SET Option.ToggleCtrlForGroupSelectionAndContextMenu = "1""
for a while now. I used to use the Control Key to prevent the Context
Sensitive issue, but just right clicking is nicer. My EVIL BILL VISTA OS
does not suffer from multiple identities and the eaglerc.usr file I patched
is in

\Users\BB\AppData\Roaming\CadSoft\EAGLE.

BB is my one and only username, so there's no confusion. Eagles 5.2, 5.3
and 5.4 all used this same location and automatically enabled the function
after each update. I also have "Search Hidden Folders" checked in the
options menu so I get those results, too.

You non-believing heretics will always be punished by THE EVIL BILL GOD for
your blasphemies! You are doomed! :-(

This folder is probably not really hidden, just a path you didn't
expect. However, since EAGLE V5 the "correct" path is used for this file.

The SET command has to be entered at the command line, so you don't need
to localize and edit the eaglerc.usr file at all.
If you do, however, use the format of all other options that are already
there - without the "SET".

Additionally: maybe you didn't change the right file. If you meanwhile
upgraded to 5.4.2, which has beta status, you'd need to change
"eaglerc.usr.beta" (in the same directory).
[Personally, I'd prefer if both versions would share the same
eaglerc.usr file...]

Turning off the context menu was the first thing I did after upgrading
to V5, as well as correcting the color palette for black background and
without alpha blending.

I share the idea, but what happens if cadsoft adds a new switch or

Up until version 4.1 this was the case, but then users complained
about beta versions modifying the eaglerc file of the released version,
so we added ".beta" to the file name.

Apparently you can't please everybody...

Hoorah.
SET Option.ToggleCtrlForGroupSelectionAndContextMenu 1; at the command line,
worked.
I thought this was supposed to make an entry in the eaglerc.usr file, but I
don't see it. Bizarre. I will make a note of this command line entry syntax
so I won't forget. And not worry about "why".

When looking at all those entries in eaglerc.usr, you could have noticed
that none of them uses SET. Since they also are alphabetically sorted,
you could have found the above entry (with a value of "0") and just
modify it to "1".

The SET command has been extended lately to allow direct modification of
some of those options that previously required manual editing of the
eaglerc.usr file. So, besides from the somewhat lengthy option names, it
has become more comfortable for those who don't want to deal with
configuration files.

This is also contained in HELP SET, by the way.
